This computer virus has been doing the rounds for a while now but there appears to be a particularly nasty variation currently circulating. The user will be tricked into installing the software by attaching it to an innocent-looking button or popup on a web page or it will be embedded in other software packages that have been installed.
Once the virus has a hold, it will display panels showing fake infections and asking for the product to be "registered". This will involve passing on your credit/debit cards details to register for the "service" of unlocking your computer and could result in more damaging infections and spyware being installed on your computer. The screens look very convincing with professional Windows-like design and it would be very easy to mistake this for bona fide anti-virus software.
Once installed, the latest version of the virus will attempt to prevent you from running any programs or accessing any websites until the "ransom" has been paid. This makes removal very difficult unless you are familiar with Windows internals and utilities.
Famous-brand PC guarding software does not always protect you against this virus so some research could be required as to which one to install to prevent infection. If you are in any doubt in how to remove this virus it is safer to consult a qualified Windows PC professional.
